In this guide — 6 sections
The south-east (Agni) corner is the preferred kitchen location, with north-west as the accepted alternative. Inside the kitchen, the cook should face east while cooking — which means the platform belongs on a wall that produces that facing. That is usually the west wall, or the east end of a south counter — not the east wall itself.
Part of the Vastu series, and the one where a single geometric detail changes the answer. Kitchen Vastu is usually discussed as a question about the room. It is far more usefully a question about the platform.
In Vastu Shastra each of the eight directions carries a deity and an element. The south-east is governed by Agni, the fire deity. Because cooking is fire-based, the kitchen is prescribed to the fire zone — the foundational logic being that the kitchen belongs where its dominant element already resides in the spatial energy map of the house.
The Climatic Logic behind the south-east
The elemental argument has a parallel in climate-responsive design that holds up particularly well in South India:
- Morning sunlight when you are actually cooking. A south-east kitchen takes sun from roughly 7am to noon — the primary cooking period in most Indian households. Natural light improves visibility, cuts the lighting load, and brings indirect warmth in cooler morning hours.
- It escapes the afternoon. South-west and west take the harshest afternoon sun, which matters where temperatures regularly pass 35°C. The south-east kitchen avoids this because the sun has moved past it by midday.
- It suits both monsoons. Prevailing winds come from the south-west between June and September and the north-east from October to December. A south-east kitchen with an east or north window captures cross ventilation from either — helping exhaust cooking vapours without relying wholly on mechanical extraction.
- The north-west alternative has its own logic. It receives relatively cool air from the north and sits windward of the south-west monsoon. Which is why it is the accepted alternative: it works elementally as Vayu, and climatically as ventilation.
Most Vastu writing asks you to accept the prescription on tradition alone. Here the tradition and the building science arrive at the same corner independently — morning light during the cooking window, no afternoon heat load, and cross ventilation available from both monsoon directions. When two different systems of reasoning agree, the recommendation is worth more than either would be alone.
One item here is not a Vastu question at all. An exhaust fan or kitchen chimney directly above the stove is mandatory under NBC 2016 Part 4 for adequate ventilation of cooking gases — regardless of the kitchen’s direction, its window configuration, or any directional consideration. Everything else in this guide is preference; that one is law.
South-East Against north-west
Read the cook’s-direction row across both columns. It is identical — the cook can face east in either kitchen. Which tells you the room direction is the less important of the two decisions, and sets up the section below.
Where the Stove Goes, and which way you face
Platform direction is the orientation of the cooking counter within the kitchen — which wall it runs along, and therefore which way the cook faces at the stove. This is distinct from the kitchen room’s direction. The room can face anywhere; it is the platform’s wall that determines the cook’s facing.
Five platform walls, and which way the cook ends up facingThe wall the platform sits on and the direction the cook faces are opposites. That inversion is where most guidance goes wrong.

Cook faces North / north-eastEast wall
Cook faces WestNorth wall
Cook faces SouthYou face away from the wall your platform is on. So “put the stove on the east wall” — advice you will see repeated widely — produces a cook facing west, which is the opposite of what the tradition asks for. To face east, the platform goes on the west wall, or the hob sits at the east end of a south-running counter.
The practical rule that follows: in an L-shaped or parallel kitchen, the hob’s position within the platform matters more than the platform’s wall. You can nearly always place the hob at the east-facing end of a counter, whichever wall that counter runs along.
“Stove on the East Wall” Makes You Face West
The platform wall and the cook's facing are opposites. It is the west wall, or the east end of a south counter, that actually delivers the east-facing cook.
Sink, Refrigerator and storage
- Sink — north-east zone. The sink is the water element, and water and fire should not share a counter edge. At minimum keep one counter section between stove and sink. In practice: the sink at the north end of the east counter, or at the north-east corner of an L-shaped layout.
- Refrigerator — south-west, south or west. The zones Vastu reserves for heavy objects, and it makes ergonomic sense too: the fridge serves the prep zone without blocking the platform or the window.
- Storage — south and west walls. Overhead cabinets on the longer south and west counters, keeping the north and east walls lighter for windows and ventilation. Modular kitchen design tends to arrive here anyway, with open shelving or a window above the east-wall sink or stove counter.
Put those three together and a workflow appears on its own. Refrigerator in the south-west corner, prep counter across the middle, sink to the north-east, stove positioned so the cook faces east. That is the Vastu layout and the work-triangle answer simultaneously — which is the second time in this guide the tradition and the practical logic land in the same place.
Open-Plan Kitchens, and when the ideal is unavailable
Open-plan homes dissolve the enclosed kitchen into a continuous kitchen-dining-living space. So how does a directional system apply when there are no walls defining the room? Four answers:
Zone anchoring
With no walls to define the room, the kitchen zone is defined by the platform, the overhead chimney and perhaps a breakfast counter. Position that zone in the south-east quadrant of the total floor plate — then the platform and cooking direction follow exactly the same rules as an enclosed kitchen.
Visual separation
An island or breakfast counter creates a spatial boundary without a wall. In Vastu terms it keeps the kitchen in its own zone rather than mixing fire energy through the living and dining areas.
Exhaust management
Vapours travel freely into the living space when there is no wall to stop them, so a powerful chimney directly above the stove matters more here than in a closed kitchen. This is a safety and functional requirement under NBC 2016, not a Vastu one.
Never the north-east
In an open floor plate the north-east is the zone Vastu holds most important for lightness, prayer space and openness. Putting the cooking platform there concentrates fire, heat and cooking odours in the one zone the tradition treats as sacred.

When the south-east is not possible
- Confirm the kitchen’s fixed positionIn a new build the architect can place it in the south-east at design stage. In a renovation or apartment, the room position is usually fixed by structural walls and plumbing point-outs — so establish which situation you are in before anything else.
- Focus on the platform directionWhatever the room faces, position the hob at the east end of the counter or on a wall that lets the cook face east. This is the single most impactful and most achievable adjustment available.
- Apply the fire-water separationSink and stove not directly adjacent, with a preparation counter between them. Achievable in any layout.
- Treat the north-east cornerIn whatever direction the kitchen faces, keep its own north-east internal corner open or give it to the sink. Never the stove, refrigerator or heavy storage.
- Colours and lightWarm bright colours — yellow, cream, white — and good task lighting above the platform. Better in the tradition, and better to work in.
Step one is the only one you may have no control over. Steps two through five are all achievable in any kitchen, in any direction, in an apartment you did not design — and together they carry most of what the tradition actually asks for. The room’s direction is the headline; the platform, the separation, the north-east corner and the light are the substance.

Only the Room's Direction Is Outside Your Control
Platform direction, fire-water separation, the north-east corner and the lighting all work in any kitchen — including one you inherited rather than designed.
The hob's position within the platform matters more than the platform's wall. You can nearly always place it at the east-facing end of a counter, whichever wall that counter runs along.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best kitchen direction as per Vastu?
The south-east — the Agni or fire corner — with north-west as the accepted alternative. But the more useful answer is that the cook should face east while cooking regardless of the room’s direction, which makes the platform position the decision that actually matters.
Why is south-east preferred?
It is the Agni direction, so it aligns elementally with cooking. Practically, a south-east kitchen in South India receives morning-to-midday sunlight through peak cooking hours and avoids the harsh afternoon western sun that overheats south-west and west kitchens. The traditional and the climatic reasoning point at the same corner independently.
Which wall should the cooking platform go on?
A wall that lets the cook face east. That means the west wall — standing at a west-wall platform, you face east. In L-shaped kitchens, placing the hob at the east end of the longer counter achieves the same facing regardless of which wall the counter runs along.
If the stove is on the east wall, which way do I face?
West — your back is to the east. This is the most common error in kitchen Vastu advice, because “stove on the east wall” sounds like it should produce an east-facing cook and does the opposite. If the east wall is your only structural option, reposition the hob to the side of the platform so the facing works out.
What is the Vastu direction for the kitchen sink?
The north or north-east zone of the kitchen, since the sink carries the water element. Sink and stove should not sit adjacent on the same counter — keep at least one counter section between them to respect the fire-water separation.
Can a north-west kitchen be Vastu compliant?
Yes. North-west is the accepted alternative when south-east is unavailable. A north-west kitchen with the platform positioned so the cook faces east, the sink to the north-east, and warm colours can be fully compliant. The room’s direction does not constrain the cook’s facing — that is set by the platform.
How do I apply this in an open-plan home?
Anchor the cooking zone to the south-east quadrant of the floor plate and position the platform so the cook faces east. Use an island or breakfast counter to separate cooking from living and dining visually. Avoid placing the platform in the north-east of the open floor — that is the zone the tradition reserves for lightness and openness.
Does Vastu require specific kitchen colours?
Warm, bright colours are recommended — yellow, orange, cream, white and light red — aligning with the Agni element. Avoid dark blue or black on primary walls. Functionally, lighter warm tones also make a kitchen feel more spacious and pleasant to work in.
Is following kitchen Vastu mandatory?
No. Vastu Shastra is a traditional design system, not a legal requirement or building code, so following it is a personal preference. All kitchen safety requirements — exhaust placement, LPG installation, fire safety and ventilation — are governed by NBC 2016 and BIS standards and are mandatory regardless.
What if I cannot change anything structural?
Only the room’s direction is genuinely outside your control. The platform direction, the fire-water separation, keeping the kitchen’s own north-east corner clear, and the colour and lighting all work in any kitchen — including one you inherited rather than designed. Together they carry most of what the tradition asks for.
Platform, Sink and Storage Aligned With Both Tradition and Workflow
Vastu kitchen preferences integrated at design stage alongside work-triangle ergonomics, climate-responsive window placement and modular planning.
A principle, not a rigid rule
Kitchen Vastu works best treated as guidance on element placement and orientation, rather than a rule that overrides structural reality. The south-east preference has both traditional and climatic reasoning behind it, and the platform direction recommendation — the cook facing east — is achievable in almost any kitchen, whichever way the room happens to face.
