Vastu for Kitchen Direction: the cook faces east.

The kitchen’s position is the developer’s decision. The stove wall, the cook’s facing and the fire-water separation are yours — and those three carry most of what the tradition actually asks for.

Direct answer

South-east — the Agni corner — is the preferred kitchen direction, with north-west as the acceptable alternative. Inside the kitchen: stove on the east or south-east wall so the cook faces east; sink in the north or north-east zone; and at least one counter between them. These three are achievable in most kitchens regardless of which way the kitchen itself faces.

Part 4 of the Vastu series, and the most frequently asked of all of them. Kitchen Vastu is also the one where the gap between the ideal and the achievable is widest — and where closing it turns out to cost almost nothing.

Traditional reasoning
Practical note

South-East

Best
The Agni (fire) corner. Placing the kitchen here aligns the fire element with the fire zone of the house — the most auspicious and energetically aligned position.
Receives good morning-to-midday light and avoids afternoon western overheating. Functional benefit converges with Vastu here.

North-West

Good alternate
The Vayu (air) corner — an acceptable alternative where south-east is unavailable. The air element supports circulation and ventilation.
Often has good cross-ventilation from north and west openings, and the prevailing monsoon wind directions can support natural exhaust in this position.

South

Acceptable with adjustment
Not ideal, but accepted where the cook can still face east — by placing the cooking platform on the east wall of a south kitchen. Better than south-west or north-east.
The platform can sit on the east wall even in a south-positioned kitchen. Confirm with the architect that structural walls permit it.

North

Not recommended
North is the direction of prosperity. Placing fire — cooking, associated with expenditure — in the north zone is considered inauspicious.
Not a common apartment configuration. Where unavoidable, the cook’s direction and stove position within the kitchen partially offset the concern.

North-East

Avoid if possible
The Ishan corner is the most sacred zone, reserved for prayer, open space or water. Placing fire here is considered energetically disruptive.
In a fixed layout you may have no choice. Focus on cooking direction, and keep the kitchen’s own north-east corner for the sink rather than the stove.

South-West

Avoid if possible
Nairuthi is associated with stability, traditionally reserved for the master bedroom, heavy structural elements and storage. A kitchen here creates an imbalance.
Practically it takes strong afternoon sun — so consider heat-blocking window treatment and a powerful exhaust fan for comfort.
If your kitchen is not south-east or north-west

In a fixed apartment layout the kitchen’s position is set by the developer’s plan and cannot change without major civil work. So focus on what is inside the kitchen: the stove position, the cook’s facing direction, and the sink-stove separation. All three are achievable in most kitchens regardless of the overall direction — which means the table above tells you your starting position, not your ceiling.

The one that matters

The Stove: the most important decision

Vastu recommends the stove on the east or south-east wall, so the cook faces east while cooking. East is associated with the sun’s morning energy. This is the single most consistently cited kitchen recommendation across all regional Vastu traditions — and, unusually, one of the easiest to satisfy.

  • East wall stove, preferred. Cook faces east. Where the east wall is load-bearing — common in apartments — the cooking platform is built against it with an overhead exhaust fan or chimney. In a south-east kitchen this alignment happens naturally.
  • North-east stove position, avoid. The Ishan corner should ideally stay open or hold the sink. Where the stove position is fixed by structure and plumbing, that layout overrides the preference.
  • The rotation fix. Where the platform is fixed and the cook cannot face east, a common mitigation is to rotate the portable hob slightly on the platform so the cook faces east even on a non-east-facing counter. This is a simple, no-cost adjustment available in any kitchen.

The exhaust fan is not a Vastu questionOne item in this guide is a legal requirement rather than a preference. It is worth knowing which.

An exhaust fan or kitchen chimney above the stove is a fire and gas safety requirement under NBC 2016 Part 4 and BIS IS 6994 for LPG appliances — not a Vastu preference.

It is mandatory for adequate ventilation and removal of cooking gases, regardless of the kitchen’s direction or the stove’s position within it. Its placement is determined by the chimney’s effective range above the burners, not by any directional rule. Everything else in this guide is optional; this is not.

Sink and the water element

  • Preferred position: the sink, representing water, belongs in the north or north-east zone of the kitchen. Water in the Ishan zone is considered auspicious.
  • Fire-water separation: stove and sink should not be adjacent or directly opposite on the same counter — the two elements are considered to conflict when they share a counter edge.
  • In practice: the sink position is usually fixed by the developer’s plumbing point-out, and moving it means rerouting drain and supply. Where sink and stove share a platform — common in L-shaped and straight layouts — Vastu asks for at least one clear counter between them.

The 600mm separation is the clearest case of convergence in this whole guide. A gap that width between sink and adjacent burner is what Vastu asks for on elemental grounds — and it is also simply good kitchen ergonomics, creating a prep zone between water and flame. You would specify it either way, which makes it the easiest recommendation here to act on.

Inside the room

Six Elements, six zones

Six elements, six zones

Inside the kitchen, whatever direction it faces

Stove

East or SE wall

The single most consistently cited recommendation across regional traditions: the cook should face east. Where the east wall is load-bearing, the platform is built against it with an overhead chimney.

Sink

North or NE zone

Water in the Ishan zone is considered auspicious. In most apartments the position is fixed by the developer’s plumbing point-out, and moving it means rerouting drain and supply.

Refrigerator

South, SW or west

Heavy objects in the south and west zones are considered stabilising. Avoid the north-east, where a large appliance is considered energy-blocking — and where circulation usually suffers anyway.

Overhead cabinets

South and west walls

Heavier storage in the south and west aligns with the stability principle. Keep north and east walls lighter — open shelving rather than closed cabinets on the primary light walls.

Small appliances

South-east zone

Microwave, mixer and toaster all belong in the Agni direction. In a south-east kitchen the cooking and appliance wall align naturally; elsewhere, use the south or south-east corner of the counter.

Windows

East or north

Morning light and air. In this climate a north or east window also brings in relatively cooler morning air before the day heats up.

The Ishan principle works at two scales, and the smaller one is the useful one. Whatever direction your kitchen faces, keep the kitchen’s own north-east corner open or use it for the sink rather than the stove. This internal application works in any kitchen, in any apartment — and it is the reason a north-east kitchen is not the problem it first appears to be.

The finish

Colour, Lighting and ventilation

Colours

Warm, bright tones — yellow, orange, light red, white or cream, associated with the fire element
They also reflect heat better than dark tones, keeping the kitchen cooler despite ambient cooking heat
Blue or black tiles on the cooking wall — water-element colours in conflict with fire

Lighting

Bright, even lighting throughout, with the cooking area especially well-lit
Under-cabinet task lighting above the platform — good kitchen design that happens to align
Dark corners — a hygiene concern as much as a Vastu one

Ventilation

East or north window for morning light and air, and relatively cooler air before the day heats up
Exhaust fan directly above the platform — positioned by the chimney’s effective range
Treating the exhaust position as a directional choice — it is a safety specification
A no-cost adjustment

Rotate the Hob and the Cook Faces East

Where the platform is fixed and the counter does not face east, turning the portable hob on the platform achieves the single most cited recommendation in kitchen Vastu — for nothing.

The summary

Do’s, Don’ts and adapting a fixed kitchen

Do

Place the stove on the east or south-east wall; cook facing east
Keep the kitchen’s north-east corner open or use it for the sink — water in the Ishan zone is acceptable
Maintain at least one counter’s gap between sink and stove
Use bright, warm colours: yellow, cream, orange, white
Install an exhaust fan or chimney directly above the stove — fire safety first, Vastu-aligned second
Keep the kitchen entrance clean and unobstructed
Position the refrigerator in the south or west zone
Ensure good natural light from east or north windows, with bright task lighting above the platform

Don’t

Stove directly adjacent to the sink — the water-fire conflict
Refrigerator or large appliances in the north-east Ishan corner
Dark colours — black, dark blue — on main walls or the cooking platform
Kitchen entrance directly facing the main entrance of the house
Religious icons or photos above or near the stove — cooking smoke and heat are considered inauspicious near sacred objects
Leaking taps or dripping pipes — considered to represent flowing wealth, and a plumbing concern besides

Four adaptations when the ideal direction is unavailable

  1. Focus on cooking directionRegardless of which way the kitchen faces, orient the platform so the cook faces east — by placing the hob on the east side, or rotating a portable one.
  2. Apply fire-water separationEnsure sink and stove are not directly adjacent. A prep zone of at least one counter between them is achievable in most standard modular layouts.
  3. North-east corner: open, or the sinkIn whatever direction the kitchen faces, keep its own north-east corner open or give it to the sink rather than the stove.
  4. Colours and lightingWarm, bright colours and good task lighting apply regardless of direction — low cost, high impact, and completely independent of structural constraint.

FAQ & close

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction should the kitchen face?

The south-east, the Agni or fire corner, is the ideal kitchen direction. North-west, the Vayu or air corner, is the accepted alternative. Where the position is fixed by the developer, focus on achievable adjustments instead: stove on the east wall, cook facing east, sink in the kitchen’s north-east corner.

Which direction should I face while cooking?

East. It is associated with the sun’s morning energy, and it is the single most consistently cited recommendation across regional traditions. Achievable in most configurations by placing the hob on the east side of the platform, or rotating a portable hob so the cook faces east regardless of the kitchen’s overall direction.

Can the kitchen be in the north-east direction?

Vastu advises against it, since the Ishan corner is considered the most sacred zone and should ideally remain open or hold water and prayer space rather than fire. In fixed apartments where it is unavoidable, keep the kitchen’s own north-east corner for the sink and face east while cooking — the principle applies at room scale too.

Where should the stove be placed?

On the east or south-east wall, so the cook faces east. It should not be directly adjacent to the sink, since fire and water elements need a gap between them, and it should not sit in the kitchen’s north-east corner.

Where should the refrigerator go?

In the south, south-west or west zone of the kitchen — heavy appliances in those zones are considered stabilising. Avoid the north-east corner. In a compact kitchen the fridge usually goes wherever clearance allows, but where there is a genuine choice, south-west is better for circulation and light as well.

What colours are good for a kitchen?

Warm, bright colours: yellow, orange, cream, white and light red, aligning with the fire element of the Agni zone. Avoid dark blue or black on cooking walls, which represent the water element. Practically, lighter tones also reflect heat better and keep a compact kitchen feeling cooler and larger.

Is a kitchen exhaust fan mandatory?

Yes. An exhaust fan or chimney above the stove is a fire and gas safety requirement under NBC 2016 Part 4 and BIS standards for LPG installations — not a Vastu preference. It is mandatory for safe removal of cooking gases and should be installed regardless of the kitchen’s direction or any Vastu consideration.

What if my kitchen is in the south-west?

Apply the achievable adjustments: stove on the east wall so the cook faces east; north-east corner of the kitchen for the sink; warm bright colours; good lighting and ventilation. Practically, a south-west kitchen also takes strong afternoon sun, so heat-blocking window treatment and a powerful exhaust fan are worth specifying for comfort.

How far apart should the sink and stove be?

At least one clear counter between them — roughly 600mm to the adjacent burner. This satisfies the fire-water separation Vastu asks for, and it is also good kitchen ergonomics, creating a prep zone between water and flame. It is the one recommendation you would specify either way.

What can I change without structural work?

Stove or hob orientation, small appliance positions, refrigerator placement where clearance allows, overhead cabinet distribution, wall colour, lighting, and keeping the north-east corner clear. The kitchen’s direction and the plumbing point-out are fixed; almost everything else that Vastu recommends is not.
