North, east, south or west facing plot: what each facing means for design, Vastu pada placement and solar gain in Chennai

North, East, South or West Facing: what it means for your design.

No facing is unbuildable. What changes is how much work the facade has to do — and that work is a one-time drawing decision, not a permanent compromise.

Direct answer

North and east are the Vastu-preferred facings and carry the lowest solar load on the front facade. South and west are entirely workable — they require deeper overhangs, reflective finishes and, on the west, vertical louvres. The entrance pada position matters more than the facing itself, and no facing should be rejected on Vastu grounds alone.

Plot facing direction is the first question most buyers ask and one of several that actually decide how well a plot serves you. It is a design brief, not a verdict.

The Four Facings, side by side

Four facings, and what each one asks of the designNone is unbuildable. The difference is how much work the facade has to do.

Facing & Vastu view
Solar gain in Chennai
Key design consideration

North

Highly favoured
Low direct gain on the north facade; soft daylight year-round.
Best natural light quality. Entrance in the north or north-east zone.

East

Auspicious
Morning sun on the facade; front rooms warm early, then shade through the afternoon.
Morning activity zones — kitchen, living — suit east-side placement.

South

Conditional
Sun on the facade from mid-morning through afternoon; significant heat gain.
Deep overhangs and reflective walls. Correct pada placement is critical.

West

Needs mitigation
Afternoon sun bakes the facade 2–6pm — the hottest part of the Chennai day.
West facade treatment is non-negotiable for comfort: overhangs, louvres, high-SRI paint.
Read the right-hand column, not the badges

The Vastu column sorts the four into two favoured and two conditional. The design column tells you something more useful: what each one actually costs you in drawing effort. North asks almost nothing. East asks you to place morning rooms thoughtfully. South asks for 900mm overhangs and a specific entrance position. West asks for vertical louvres and reflective paint. All four of those are decisions made once, on paper, before anything is built.

The favoured pair

Planning a North or east plot

North-facing

Kubera — the most Vastu-preferred
Main entrance
North or north-east sector. The exact pada placement matters more than simply centring the door.
Living room
North-facing living rooms get consistent, glare-free daylight — a genuine comfort advantage, not just a tradition.
Kitchen
South-east Agni corner, which on a north-facing plan sits at the rear-right. Vastu and plan geometry agree here without effort.
Master bedroom
South-west corner — rear-left on a north-facing plan.
Parking
North-west front zone, keeping the north-east Brahmasthan approach open and clear.
South boundary
Can be built higher for privacy without cutting light to the main living areas.

East-facing

Auspicious — favoured for morning activity
Main entrance
East or north-east sector; the E3 or E4 pada zone.
Living and dining
East-side placement catches the morning light — useful for rooms that are active early.
Kitchen
South-east, rear-right on an east-facing plan. Aligns with Vastu and with the practical logic of a rear kitchen.
Master bedroom
South-west, rear-left — less morning sun, cooler through the day.
Study or home office
North or north-east, for soft consistent daylight without glare.
Ventilation
An east-west axis captures both morning and evening breezes.

Notice what the kitchen row says in both blocks. On a north-facing plan the south-east Agni corner lands at the rear-right; on an east-facing plan it lands at the rear-right too. In both cases the Vastu preference and the practical logic of a rear kitchen arrive at the same spot without anyone having to compromise — which is a large part of why these two facings are described as easy.

The working pair

Planning a South or west plot

South-facing

Workable with the right design
Main entrance
S3 or S4 pada — never the south-west corner. This is the single most critical Vastu parameter for a south-facing plot.
South facade
Deep horizontal overhangs, minimum 900mm, over every south-facing window, plus high-SRI exterior paint.
Living room
Push living spaces toward the north or east of the interior — the cooler sides of a south-facing building.
Master bedroom
North or north-west in the interior layout, holding the south-west preference relative to the plan rather than the plot.
Garden and setback
The CMDA front setback on the south can take medium-height trees to shade the south wall without blocking the entrance.
Resale
Well-designed south-facing homes sell and rent without issue. Buyers respond to comfort and construction quality, not facing alone.

West-facing

Not prohibited — requires specific mitigation
Main entrance
W3, W4 or W5 pada. Set it into a recessed porch or loggia — shading the door, creating a transition zone, and satisfying the Vastu requirement for a defined entrance at once.
Vertical louvres
Vertical elements shade a west wall far better than horizontal overhangs, because the afternoon sun arrives low. Even 150–200mm fins at 600mm centres make a significant difference.
High-SRI paint
Solar Reflective Index paint can drop west wall surface temperature by 8–12°C, meaningfully cutting heat transfer into the rooms behind.
Window area
Minimise west-facing bedroom glazing — bedrooms are occupied through exactly the afternoon and evening hours when that facade is worst.
Planting
A pergola or climbing trellis where setback allows. Trees 3–5m from the wall, clear of the foundation, give effective shade from year three.
Internal planning
Living room toward the interior or east. Put service areas, storage, stairs and bathrooms on the west — spaces less affected by afternoon heat and glare.
The west-facing verdict, stated plainly

A west-facing plot is not a problem — it is a design brief. The facade takes direct afternoon sun from roughly 2pm to sunset, in a city where March-to-June afternoons run 35–41°C, and the low angle makes it genuinely hard to shade with horizontal overhangs alone. Building science on warm-humid climates consistently identifies west facades as needing the most active solar protection — not because such homes are uninhabitable, but because the designer has to do more work.

So the practical advice is: do not reject a west-facing plot on Vastu or comfort grounds alone. Evaluate it on road width, setback availability, plot dimensions and price — then brief the architect to design the west facade correctly. It is a one-time decision that costs nothing extra when handled at the drawing stage.

Evaluate on the things that are fixed

A West-Facing Plot Is a Design Brief, Not a Verdict

Road width, setback, dimensions and price cannot be redesigned. The facade can — and it costs nothing extra if it is handled on the drawing.

The finer point

Entrance Pada by facing direction

Definition — pada

Each facade is divided into eight equal parts called padas, each carrying a name and a quality. In Vastu the exact pada position of the main entrance matters more than the general facing direction of the plot — which means a “south-facing” verdict tells you far less than where on that south wall the door actually sits.

North-facing
N3Mukhya N4Bhallat N5Soma — Generally centre-to-left of the north facade.
East-facing
E3Jayanta E4Indra — Centre of the east facade is the standard guidance.
South-facing
S3Vithatha S4Gruhakshat — Critical that the south-west corner — S1 and S2 — is avoided for the entrance.
West-facing
W3Sugreev W4Pushpdant W5Varun — Centre-right of the west facade.

Padas are calculated from the exact compass bearing of the front facade, divided into eight equal parts — which means a professional consultation uses a compass reading taken at the site, not a map. Online facing-direction guides that ignore padas give incomplete guidance, because they answer the less important of the two questions.

Eight Things That Matter as much as facing

Factor to evaluateWhy it matters
Road position and widthDetermines the facing in the first place. Wider roads allow larger setbacks and more design flexibility.
CMDA setback requirementsThe front setback can run from 1.5m to 4.5m or more depending on road width — which directly changes your usable plot area.
Plot dimensionsA narrow-but-deep plot is harder to plan than a square one in any direction. East-west width is what governs cross ventilation.
Neighbouring buildingsA tall building immediately west shades a north-facing plot from afternoon sun — sometimes more effectively than orientation does.
Prevailing windThe south-west monsoon means plots open on that side get natural cross ventilation from June to September.
Site levels and drainageA plot sloping toward the north-east drains away from the building naturally — a Vastu coincidence and a practical benefit at once.
Underground utilitiesPower lines, water mains and drainage connections on the road affect where the gate and entrance can practically go.
Neighbourhood and resaleIn most Chennai localities resale tracks neighbourhood quality, construction quality and size — not facing alone.
The one that quietly outranks facing

Look at the neighbouring-buildings row again. A tall structure immediately to your west can shade a plot from afternoon sun more effectively than any orientation would — and equally, an empty plot to the west today may not stay empty. Facing is fixed and knowable; what surrounds you is neither, which is a good reason to walk the site at 3pm rather than judge it from a listing.

CheckConfirm before design
Exact compass bearing of the front facade confirmed with a site reading, not a map
CMDA setbacks verified for your road width and zone before the layout is finalised
Brahmasthan identified — the geometric centre — and kept open in the floor plan
Prevailing wind access confirmed, typically south-west, for cross-ventilation design
Entrance pada preference given to the architect as part of the brief
South-facing: entrance confirmed in S3 or S4 — never S1 or S2
South-facing: minimum 900mm horizontal overhangs on all south windows
South-facing: high-SRI exterior paint specified, SRI above 70, on south and west walls
South-facing: habitable rooms placed toward the north side of the interior
West-facing: vertical louvres or fins specified on the west facade
West-facing: west bedroom and living window area minimised
West-facing: service areas — storage, bathrooms, staircase — placed on the west of the plan
The question behind the question

Where the Door Sits Matters More Than Which Way the Plot Faces

Padas are measured from a compass bearing taken at the site. A facing-direction guide that skips them is answering the easier question.

A north-facing home with the entrance in the N8 pada is considered inauspicious. The same plot with the entrance in N3 is considered highly auspicious.

FAQ & close

Frequently Asked Questions

Which facing plot is best as per Vastu?

North-facing is traditionally the most auspicious — associated with Kubera and receiving soft diffused daylight at Indian latitudes — with east second. But the tradition also holds that any direction can be made auspicious through correct entrance pada placement. South and west are not prohibited, and no direction is inherently unsuitable.

Is a west-facing house bad as per Vastu?

No. Vastu specifies the correct pada positions for a west entrance — W3 Sugreev, W4 Pushpdant, W5 Varun — and gives room placement guidance for west-facing homes. The real challenge is afternoon solar gain, which is an architectural issue rather than a Vastu one, addressed through vertical louvres, high-SRI paint, a recessed porch and internal planning.

Does plot facing affect resale value in Chennai?

Resale is driven primarily by locality, construction quality, floor area, building age and amenities — not orientation. A well-designed home on a west or south plot typically sells at comparable rates to similar homes on north or east plots in the same neighbourhood. Buyers do ask about facing, but experienced ones understand that good design addresses it.

Can a south-facing plot have a good design?

Yes. It needs deep horizontal overhangs on the south facade, high-SRI exterior paint and a north-biased interior plan. The entrance must sit in the S3 Vithatha or S4 Gruhakshat pada to meet Vastu guidance. South-facing plots are common here and well served by experienced architects.

What does “plot facing direction” actually mean?

Which compass direction the main road falls on relative to the plot. Road to the north means a north-facing plot, and the entrance opens toward the north. The facing is fixed by the road and cannot be changed — what the architect designs is how the building sits within that orientation.

Is east-facing better than north-facing?

Both are auspicious and both have practical advantages here. North gets the most consistent diffused daylight on the front facade and is the most Vastu-preferred; east gets pleasant morning sun on the living areas. Where you have a choice, it usually comes down to price, road width, neighbourhood and dimensions rather than a clear architectural winner.

How important is pada placement compared to facing?

In traditional texts the pada matters more. A north-facing home with the entrance in the N8 Diti pada is considered inauspicious; the same plot with the entrance in N3 Mukhya is considered highly auspicious. Before fixating on facing, establish which pada your proposed entrance will actually occupy.

What is the Brahmasthan and why does it matter?

The geometric centre of the plot or building footprint, which Vastu texts recommend keeping free of enclosed rooms, heavy columns or utilities. Architecturally, an open or semi-open centre — a courtyard, light well or atrium — serves the same end by bringing light and ventilation into the heart of the home. This applies regardless of facing.

Can I change my plot’s facing direction?

No — it is set by the road position. What you can change is how the building responds: entrance, living spaces and main windows positioned for comfort, high-performance materials on the west facade, and an interior plan that keeps habitable rooms away from afternoon heat. A skilled architect treats orientation as a design parameter, not a limitation.

Does solar gain really differ that much between facings?

Significantly. At roughly 13°N a north facade never receives direct beam sun year-round — only diffused skylight. A west facade takes intense direct sun from around 2pm to sunset at a low angle that standard horizontal overhangs cannot handle. That translates into measurably higher cooling loads in west-facing rooms, which is why west-specific measures matter.

A parameter, not a limitation

Plot facing direction is fixed by the road and cannot be changed — but it decides far less than buyers assume.
