Read the table top to bottom and a clean division appears. Everything that aligns strongly is about the building envelope — where openings go, which facade takes sun, how the centre breathes, where the mass sits. Everything that conflicts is about services and structure — stacks, grids, egress, drainage slope.
That is not a coincidence. Vastu was formulated as a system for orienting a building on its land, and it turns out to be a competent one for this latitude. It has nothing to say about a vertical plumbing stack serving four floors, because that problem did not exist — which is precisely why the conflicts land where they do.
Five Places the two systems converge
Worth understanding not because the texts were written as climate science — they were not — but because the recommendations had practical value that building physics has since confirmed independently:
North and east openings
India sits between 8°N and 37°N, so the sun tracks across the southern sky year-round. North walls therefore receive no direct beam sunlight — only soft diffused skylight, consistently comfortable and glare-free. East openings take morning sun at a manageable angle before the afternoon peak. NZEB India and ECBC guidance for warm-humid climates recommends exactly this, arriving there from building physics rather than tradition.
West facade caution
Vastu discourages large openings or entry doors on the west. In Chennai the west wall takes direct sun from roughly 2pm to sunset — the hottest period of the day — and needs the most aggressive shading of any facade. Two systems, entirely different starting points, same practical conclusion.
The Brahmasthan coincidence
Vastu keeps the geometric centre free of heavy columns, enclosed rooms and utility cores, on the reasoning that it should stay light and energetically clear. Architecturally, an open centre — courtyard, light well, atrium — brings daylight and ventilation into the middle of a deep floor plate, which is where peripheral cross-ventilation cannot reach. Traditional South Indian courtyard houses satisfied both without anyone treating them as separate requirements.
South-west heaviness
The south-west is assigned heaviness and the earth element, with thick walls and load-bearing elements placed there. Those same south and west walls take the highest solar radiation at Indian latitudes, and heavier walls increase thermal mass — absorbing and delaying heat transfer, reducing indoor temperature swing. The material recommendation and the thermal physics agree.
North-east openness
Vastu keeps the north-east corner open, for prayer rooms, gardens or light-use spaces. That corner receives the coolest, most diffused light and sits leeward during the south-west monsoon. An open north-east supports stack ventilation — warm air rising and leaving through upper north-east openings as cooler air enters low from the south-west.
The Brahmasthan case is the most instructive of the five. Traditional South Indian courtyard houses kept the centre open, and in doing so satisfied a spiritual prescription and a ventilation requirement at the same time — without anyone needing to treat those as two separate design problems. The rule and the need simply coincided, which is a fair description of what the whole section is documenting.

An honest account of the real tensions in Chennai residential projects. The three with a bordered edge are the ones where something external decides, not the architect:
Compact urban plots
Many Chennai plots run 2,400 sq.ft or smaller, and CMDA setbacks cut the buildable area substantially before any zone assignment begins. Put a 3m front setback, 3m rear and 1.5m sides on a 30×40 and there is little freedom left for an ideal layout — then the structural grid constrains where rooms can land at all. Not a reason to abandon Vastu, but a reason to adjust expectations.

Vastu prefers south, south-west or west. Real placement is governed by the column grid — stairs fall between structural bays — plus NBC 2016 egress, CMDA minimum widths and headroom, and the stair’s relationship to every floor it serves. Stacks must run vertically and coordinate across floors, so their positions are fixed by the structural grid and by every unit above and below. Even the toilet seat direction — north or south in Vastu — is a secondary adjustment often constrained by drain slope and stack entry point.

Vastu assigns distinct functions to distinct zones and traditionally implies separate rooms. But an experienced architect can hold the intent of those assignments inside an open plan using ceiling levels, flooring transitions, furniture and lighting. In Velachery, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur and along OMR the plot may face west simply because the road is west. That is fixed. Architecture has clear answers — vertical fins, high-SRI paint, recessed porches, service areas on the west. The architectural problem is solvable; the Vastu preference remains one the plot may not satisfy.

So the genuine, irreducible tension in a Chennai home comes down to three things.
Vastu Does Not Disagree With Good Design. It Disagrees With the Stack.
Where the two genuinely part company it is the column grid, the drainage slope or the fire code doing the deciding — not a difference in values.

Delivering the easy accommodations first is not just efficient sequencing — it is what earns the standing to have the harder conversation. An architect who has already honoured the entrance, the prayer room and the master bedroom without being asked twice is heard very differently when they explain why the staircase cannot move. The order of the steps is the substance of the method.
When the Family and the drawing disagree
- Acknowledge both as legitimate. Vastu preferences are often deeply meaningful — tied to family tradition, personal belief, and the wish for wellbeing in the home. A good architect does not dismiss them. Structural integrity, thermal comfort and regulatory compliance are equally non-negotiable. The conversation works when both sets of concerns are treated as real inputs.
- Separate the fixed from the flexible. Some decisions are genuinely fixed by site, structure or law; others are not. When a homeowner sees the structural drawing showing why the stair must sit in that bay, the discussion becomes about the structural reality rather than about Vastu against the architect’s taste.
- Find the common ground first. Most common preferences can be accommodated when the process starts early. Conflicts cluster in a small set that structural constraints drive. Delivering the easy accommodations builds the trust for the harder conversations.
- Bring in a Vastu professional where it is warranted. Where a family has requirements beyond general preferences — remedies, specific measurements, textual interpretation — it is appropriate to suggest one.
