Direct answer

The ideal living room direction is north or east — both receive good natural light and align with traditional energy flow. The sofa should face east or north; the TV should sit on the south or south-east wall; the main entrance should open into unobstructed space. In an apartment, these ideals must be balanced against fixed structural walls and limited reorientation.

Part 3 of the Vastu series. Living room Vastu becomes most useful once it is separated from what a homeowner can actually change — which in an apartment is a much shorter list than most guidance assumes, and a more effective one.

The premise

Fixed Against controllable

Almost every disagreement about apartment Vastu comes from mixing these two lists. Sorting them first makes the rest of the guide actionable:

What you control

Every item here is reversible and costs little
Furniture placement — sofa direction, TV wall, table position
Colour selection on every wall
Lighting direction — ambient, accent and curtain choice
Plant placement by zone
Mirror positioning relative to door and screen
Entrance zone presentation — foyer, clutter, name plate

What is fixed

Decided by the building plan before you moved in
Living room facing — set by the plot orientation
Main door position — fixed by the building’s plan
Structural walls and columns
Window and balcony positions
Plumbing risers and service shafts
Room proportions and circulation width

Notice how much of the standard advice lives on the left. Sofa direction, TV wall, colour, mirrors, plants and lighting are all in your control — and together they cover the great majority of what Vastu recommends for a living room. The fixed column matters mainly for understanding your starting position, not for changing it.

Your starting position

Six Facings, tradition and reality

Six facings: tradition against apartment realityRead both columns. Where they disagree, the right column is the one you can act on.

Facing & rating
Traditional benefit
Apartment reality

North-facing

Excellent
Associated with prosperity; receives good morning light from the north-east at this latitude. Traditionally the most auspicious direction for a social space.
The living room naturally faces the road or main approach. Achievable and common.

East-facing

Very good
The direction of the rising sun. Living rooms facing east receive energising morning light, suiting daytime and social activity.
Common here, and the morning light benefit is real and functional, not only traditional.

North-east

Very good
The Ishan corner is considered highly auspicious for light and open spaces; living rooms or large windows facing it are recommended.
Where the balcony or primary window faces north-east, the light and ventilation benefit aligns with the recommendation.

South-facing

Acceptable
South is the direction of Yama and generally less preferred for main living spaces — though south-facing apartments are extremely common and work well functionally.
Well-ventilated, with consistent light and no direct western glare. The Vastu concern here is traditional, not functional.

West-facing

Acceptable with mitigation
Not a preferred direction for the main living room. West-facing rooms receive afternoon sun, which brings heat in this climate.
The heat is a real functional concern, mitigated by an overhanging chajja and a light-coloured west wall. The traditional concern is separate.

South-west

Avoid if possible
The Nairuthi corner, traditionally reserved for the master bedroom and heavy furniture. A living room here is considered less auspicious.
In a fixed layout you often have no choice. Functional and structural decisions take priority over this preference.
Read the two columns separately

Two of these facings carry a traditional concern with no functional counterpart — south-facing apartments are well-ventilated with consistent light, and the objection is purely directional. One carries a functional concern that is entirely real: west-facing rooms take afternoon heat in this climate, and that is worth mitigating regardless of what Vastu says. Knowing which kind of concern you are dealing with tells you whether to act or simply to note it.

03 / 6
The furniture

Sofa and TV: one decision, not two

Seating

  • The main sofa should face east or north — meaning its back faces west or south. This is the position for the primary occupant.
  • Place the sofa against the south or south-west wall. This aligns with Vastu’s recommendation that heavier furniture sits in the south or west zone, keeping north and east lighter and more open.
  • Avoid the sofa against the north or east wall. Those walls should ideally hold windows or stay open — a large sofa against the primary light wall blocks natural light from reaching the interior of the room.

Television

  • South-east wall, preferred. The Agni corner is considered appropriate for electronics. Where the main window faces north or east, this also keeps the screen away from the window — avoiding glare and contrast problems.
  • South wall, acceptable. Good for larger rooms where the TV sits comfortably opposite the main seating.
  • North or north-east wall, avoid. It puts the viewer facing south or south-west, the opposite of the seating recommendation — and in a north-facing apartment it places the screen in front of the main light source.

These two are the same decision. In a standard 300–450 sq.ft apartment living room the sofa faces the TV unit on the opposite wall, so the TV wall determines the seating direction entirely. Put the TV on the south wall and the sofa faces north — a Vastu-aligned configuration that also happens to be the right answer for afternoon light management. Choose the TV wall and the sofa follows.

The details

Entrance, Light, mirrors and plants

Main entrance

The door position is fixed by the building plan — what you control is the foyer
A clean, well-lit foyer with no shoes or clutter visible from the main door
Name plate on the right of the door
Where the door opens onto a wall or column, a mirror at 90° to the door — not facing it — visually expands the entry

Lighting

Keep north and east windows unobstructed; sheer curtains rather than blackout in the main living room
Bright, even ambient light from the centre or north zone of the ceiling
Avoid single high-contrast spotlights that create strong shadows
Accent lights on the south or south-west wall for artwork or display

Mirrors

A mirror on the north wall is considered auspicious — and practically expands a compact room
Never directly facing the main entrance, which is believed to reflect incoming energy back out
Never facing the TV — the reflection is both a visual disturbance and a Vastu concern
Side and perpendicular walls are the safe positions on both counts

Plants

Small plants — money plant, peace lily, bamboo — in the north or north-east zone
They also benefit functionally from the cooler, diffused light those corners receive
Avoid large plants in the south-west, considered energy-disrupting
Practically, large plants in low-light south-west corners often struggle anyway

Colour by facing

North-facing

White, cream, light blue or green — complements the cool northern light
Dark tones on the primary light-receiving wall

East-facing

Cream, light yellow or soft orange — complements morning sunlight
Dark tones, which reduce light penetration into the room interior

South and west

Yellows, off-whites and warm tones — work with the stronger afternoon light
Dark colours, on walls already taking strong afternoon sun
Definition

The Brahmasthana is the energetic centre of a room, which Vastu recommends keeping open. A glass coffee table or a small low piece is acceptable; a large sofa or cabinet unit in the exact centre is not — which happens to match how circulation works in a compact room anyway.

One wall decides both

Choose the TV Wall and the Sofa Direction Follows

In a 300–450 sq.ft room the seating faces the screen, so a single placement decision settles the Vastu question and the glare question at once.

Getting it right

Five Mistakes, and how to balance the rest

  • The sofa-facing-south-west myth. If occupants face north-east, that is actually a good seating direction — the rule is frequently mis-stated. What to avoid is the sofa back against the north-east wall, which blocks the Ishan light corner
  • TV on the north-east wall — blocks the Ishan corner, creates screen glare from the primary light source, and leaves the viewer facing south-west
  • Mirror directly facing the main entrance — the most frequently cited living room mistake, and among the easiest to correct by moving it to a side wall
  • Dark paint on north or east walls — blocks natural light functionally, and runs against the recommendation for lighter tones on primary light-receiving walls
  • Cluttered entrance zone — shoes and bags in the foyer are a practical space problem and a Vastu concern at once. A shoe rack inside the entrance solves both simultaneously

The first item is worth dwelling on, because it is a rule that circulates in the wrong form. ‘Do not face south-west’ gets repeated as advice about where occupants sit, when the actual concern is where the sofa’s back goes. A sofa positioned so occupants face north-east is well placed; the same sofa pushed flat against the north-east wall is not.

How to balance Vastu with modern design

  1. Prioritise these firstNatural light, ventilation, furniture ergonomics and safety — clear circulation, no trip hazards. Non-negotiable for a functional living room regardless of Vastu.
  2. Align where the choice is evenWhen two arrangements are equally functional, choose the one that aligns better with the directional recommendations. That is what Vastu is good for.
  3. Use Vastu for colour and décorPlants, mirrors, colour and lighting direction are low-cost, reversible decisions that can align with Vastu at no structural cost at all.
  4. Never compromise on structureMoving a wall, relocating a column or shifting a plumbing riser for Vastu purposes without a structural engineer’s approval creates real safety risk. Adjustments work within the apartment’s structural constraints.

CheckAll achievable without structural change
Main sofa back faces south or west; seating direction is north or east
TV on the south-east or south wall; not in front of the main window
North and east walls unobstructed — windows or sheer curtains, no heavy furniture blocking light
Centre of the room kept open — no heavy furniture in the Brahmasthana zone
Mirror on the north or east wall; not facing the main entrance, not facing the TV
Lighter tones on north and east walls; warm tones on south and west
Plants in the north or north-east zone; no large plants in the south-west corner
Entrance well-lit and clear; no clutter visible from the door, name plate on the right
Even ambient lighting from the centre ceiling — no single high-contrast spotlight
No sharp-edged or protruding furniture corners pointing at seating — also a practical safety consideration

FAQ & close

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction is best for a living room?

North and east are the most auspicious — north is associated with prosperity, east brings morning sunlight. In an apartment the living room’s direction is fixed by the building’s plan, but furniture arrangement, colours and accessory placement can still be aligned with Vastu principles.

Where should the sofa be placed?

With its back against the south or west wall, so the occupant faces north or east. This keeps the north and east zones open and light. Practically, a sofa against the south wall facing north also manages afternoon western light well — the traditional and functional answers coincide.

Where should the TV be placed?

On the south-east or south wall, so the viewer faces south-east or south. The south-east Agni direction is considered appropriate for electronics. Avoid the north-east wall — the Ishan corner should remain open — and avoid placing the TV directly opposite a mirror.

What colours are good for a living room?

Lighter tones for north and east walls: white, cream, light yellow or light green. South and west walls take warmer tones: yellow, ochre or warm off-white. Avoid dark colours on north and east walls, which reduce natural light in addition to not aligning with the energy flow principle.

Where should I place a mirror?

On the north or east wall. Avoid mirrors directly facing the main entrance, believed to reflect positive energy outward, and mirrors facing the TV screen, which causes glare and visual disturbance. A large north-wall mirror also visually expands a compact room.

Can I follow Vastu in a south-facing apartment?

Yes. A south-facing apartment does not prevent Vastu alignment in the living room. Furniture arrangement, colour, mirror placement, plant placement and lighting direction can all be aligned within the fixed layout. The structural direction is one factor; internal arrangement is fully within your control.

Are Vastu tips mandatory for apartments?

No. Vastu Shastra is a traditional system of spatial design — not a building code, safety regulation or legal requirement under any applicable standard. Following it is a personal preference. All structural, safety and regulatory decisions must follow licensed professional guidance and applicable building standards.

What should be in the centre of the living room?

The Brahmasthana should ideally be kept open, or hold only low, light furniture such as a glass coffee table. Heavy sofas or cabinets in the exact centre are not recommended — and keeping the centre open also improves circulation and makes a compact room feel more spacious.

Is the sofa-facing-south-west rule real?

It is frequently mis-stated. If occupants face north-east, that is actually a good seating direction. The real concern is the sofa’s back against the north-east wall, which blocks the Ishan light corner. A sofa positioned so occupants face north-east is well placed; the same sofa pushed flat against that wall is not.

What can I change without any structural work?

Furniture placement, colour on every wall, lighting direction and fittings, plant placement, mirror positioning, and the entrance zone presentation. Together these cover the great majority of what Vastu recommends for a living room — all reversible, all low cost, and none requiring permission or a contractor.
